Ivy’s Bridal Session

We’ve sorted the stacks of un-blogged sessions from 2009 and we’re excited to catch you up on some of our favorite fab images that we didn’t have time to share with you during the busy season last year!

Bridal sessions, in particular, are hard for me to remember to blog, because they’re “top secret” until after the wedding, so I’m not surprised we forgot to blog about Ivy’s bridal portraits. Here are several of our favorites from the session at the Scottish Rite Temple in Guthrie, OK.

I can’t say we often turn stain-glass windows into B&W images, but this one just really begged to be B&W.

We’ll try to blog some of Ivy’s wedding day favorites next, so check back soon to see them! We had a few surprises to deal with at the wedding, including rain for her beautiful outside ceremony! But we got some great shots and everyone had a good time despite the weather. It was easily one of the most memorable weddings of 2009. =)

Tori’s Bridal Portraits :: A Few Favorites

Congratulations, Tori & Brandon, on a fun Las Vegas wedding at The Mirage on the Strip! Now that they’re married, we can blog a few favorites from Tori’s colorful bridal session at the OKC Museum of Art. It was our first visit there for portraits, and were we in for a treat!

The colors and lighting are AMAZING in the Chihuly exibit.

Quick tip for photographers who may want to shoot there… Don’t put any weight on the exhibit platforms! Apparently, the previous photographer to shoot there had cracked several of the exhibits by having a bride sit and stand up on the platform next to the actual exhibits. Oops! The museum staff were on high alert when we arrived and I was glad to know what we could and couldn’t do. I was actually quite amazed at how nice they were despite their previous photographer experience.

Apparently, they host a Thursday “Cocktails on the Skyline” up here during the warmer months of the year. I’m going to have to check that out next May when it reopens!

In other news, we’re in the process of re-activating all of our sessions from this year to accommodate holiday card and gift print orders. Last date for ordering cards and gift prints is going to be sometime early in December, so now’s the time to be making those plans!

Brandi’s Trash the Dress Session

Tonight was a first for us… We got to shoot a bride, after the wedding, who wanted to sacrifice her dress for some fun and unique pictures! It’s been called “trashing the dress,” but we didn’t really trash the dress all that much. It was kinda black and dirty in several places, but we didn’t purposely wreck it. It’s still cleanable and preservable… I think! =)

Thanks for being our first victim, er, subject for a post-wedding bridal session, Brandi! You were a superb model and Devin was (for the most part) a willing accessory-slash-accomplice. Have I mentioned how great you two look together?!

So, my idea was to just blog one or two, but I couldn’t narrow down fewer than eight favorites! Hope y’all don’t mind a big ol’ sneak preview!

We’d love to hear what you think, since this is our first “trash the dress” kinda session!

Now it’s off to check the pool before going to bed… Last night we had kids toss all of our pool furniture and garbage cans in. That wasn’t very nice and I’d love to catch them red-handed with my 6-cell mag-light in hand. =) Yeah, you can call me Paul Blart… If I had a Segway, I’d totally be riding one right now, just for the stealth of it. =)

Kristen’s Bridal Portraits and Some Recent Happenings

We’re still alive! =) Just wanted to confirm that, despite our lapse in blogging for the last couple of weeks. I’ll give you an update below, but first…

Here are some favorites from the bridal session we did for Kristen back in March up at the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple in Guthrie. Now that Kristen is married, we can finally share them!

It’s definitely the busy season! Editing is piling up and the warm weather is settling in! Despite everything that we had going on, we just got back from taking almost a week off to visit with family — particularly my grandfather who was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. He lives in the Caribbean and was flying up to visit family in Iowa, so we made an impromptu road trip in order to see him and the rest of the family.

My uncle recently moved to Iowa with his wife and eight children (yes, 8!) and lives in a massive (former) bed and breakfast, so amazingly, all 30 of us actually stayed with him without any trouble or inconvenience at all! Now, you have to understand that my family is just a little bit loud, especially when they’re all together, so it was really amazing that we were all able to stay in one home and not lift the roof. =)

Anyway, the visit was SO enjoyable! It was really restful and therapeutic to see everyone and to visit for a few days. Grandpa’s Alzheimer’s has started to affect his memory, mainly short-term, but the joy of being able to see him and enjoy his company far outweighed the sadness. I couldn’t help but think that this may be the last time we visit with him as he is right now… That maybe next time he wouldn’t remember us… Or that maybe there wouldn’t be a next time. Life is so short and these things definitely help us to keep our priorities straight.

Driving back from Iowa, we actually stopped in Tulsa to attend the memorial service for a friend, and amazing pianist, composer and conductor Larry Dalton, who died unexpectedly of a heart attack two weeks ago. I was shocked to find out that Larry was actually 63 years old. In my mind, he was in his 40′s… he was so energetic, such a fun, interesting person to be around, and quite the prankster I might add. The music at the memorial service was just amazing and there was no end to the stories people had to share about him. Larry’s ability to relate to and converse with anyone was really outstanding. I’ve heard that the essence of a gentleman is being able to put those around you at ease, and Larry was so good at making those near him comfortable. Today, we’re listening to some of our favorite arrangements he did, including one that we used at our own wedding for Holly to walk down the aisle to. We were really honored to even have Larry play piano at our wedding… so many great memories.

Between Grandpa’s diagnosis and Larry’s recent passing, I am reminded of a quote that says it’s better to be in the house of mourning than of feasting for a few reasons…

It reminds us that ultimately that’s where we’re all headed
It gives us a more healthy view of and appreciation for life
It’s foolish to seek only fun and merriment all the time

And so, after this week’s experiences, I find myself a little more contemplative than usual. I hope you don’t mind.

Today’s Bridal Session

We're Back!

After a grand finale at Whitewater yesterday, we’re finally back from our vacation visiting my family up in Pennsylvania. We had a great time, but it’s always nice to be back home.

I had a sampling from two recent sessions that I wanted to post while I was out, but our internet access was pitiful (along with our cell phone coverage) so I wasn’t able to. So, after some delay, here are a few pictures from sessions we did right before we left.

These pictures were from a session we did for a bride and groom who weren’t really happy with the wedding pictures they got with another photographer. A lot happens on a wedding day and it’s easy to overlook otherwise obvious details with so much going on and the other photographer somehow didn’t get any pictures of the happy couple by themselves on the wedding day. So, they contacted us to see if we could help them out with some pictures like that; and, of course, we were happy to. =)

New Pics :: The Love Sisters

It’s not every day that you see three sisters all in their wedding dresses. The Love sisters all got married in the last year or so, and decided it would be fun to have a joint bridal shoot just for kicks and giggles since they could all still fit into their wedding dresses. That’s more than I could do a year after I got married! Kudos to them! Anyway, here are the pics. There were a lot of really great pics, so check out the proof page by clicking on the photo below.
